BOYD SEEVERS

Boyd Seevers is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament Studies at the University of Northwestern—St. Paul, MN where he had been been teaching Old Testament at University of Northwestern since 2000. Prior to Northwestern, he lived in

Israel for eight years with his wife, Karen, and their four children. Since coming to Northwestern, he has led numerous trips

back to Israel for study, teaching during sabbatical, archaeological excavation, and filming for distance education courses.

He is an expert on ancient warfare and has participated in numerous archaeological excavations in Israel. He has published

in the fields of biblical geography and history, ancient warfare, linguistics, archaeology, and the Christian life.

He has served on the boards for Jerusalem University College (Jerusalem, Israel) since 2011, and the Near East Archaeological Society since 2015, as well as the editorial committee for the Near East Archaeological Society Bulletin since 2021.

Seevers also enjoys competing in marathons and Ironman triathlons. In 2006 and 2012 he was Northwestern’s

Teacher of the Year and in 2022, he was Northwestern’s Scholar of the Year. In 2005 he was placed on the

“Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” list.

Seevers has twice served two-year terms as J. Edwin Hartill Endowed Professor in the department of Biblical & Theological Studies.

For 2016–2017, his scholarly focus was on archaeological work at Khirbet el-Maqatir (possibly the site of Ai of Joshua 7–8) in Israel. He and UNW students sought to confirm the historical accuracy of the book of Joshua through excavation and publication.

Seevers’ archaeological work has now shifted to ancient Shiloh where the Tabernacle stood and Eli and Samuel ministered.

Seevers continues to work with UNW students in digging and publishing the finds, including for his 2022–2024 Hartill appointment.
